Raveena Tandon has come out strongly in support of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after the latter was trolled online for her appearance at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The actress criticised the culture of judging women through the narrow lens of age, weight and appearance, saying that such behaviour has become one of the most toxic aspects of social media.
Aishwarya had made her much-awaited appearance on the Cannes red carpet earlier this year in a sculptural blue outfit designed by Amit Aggarwal. While several fans praised her look, a section of social media users criticised her appearance, outfit and photographs from the event.
Raveena Tandon Defends Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Reacting to the trolling, Raveena said it was deeply unfair to reduce
a woman’s identity to her physical appearance. She questioned why public conversations around women, especially actresses, continue to revolve around how they look rather than what they have achieved.
“It is unfortunate and incredibly unfair. This relentless, hyper-fixation on a woman’s aging process, her weight, or her wardrobe choice is an ongoing toxic trait of our digital culture,” Raveena said in a statement.
The actress said that the constant scrutiny women face online reflects an unhealthy digital culture, where even accomplished public figures are judged through unflattering pictures, camera angles or experimental fashion choices.
Raveena Tandon Praises Aishwarya Rai’s Global Legacy
Raveena also praised Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s contribution to Indian cinema and her long-standing global presence. She said Aishwarya has represented India with grace and dignity on international platforms for decades.
“Aishwarya is an absolute global icon who has represented our country with unparalleled dignity and grace on international platforms for decades. To reduce a woman of her stature, achievements, and intelligence down to a bad camera angle or an experimental dress is just miserable behaviour,” she added.
According to Raveena, focusing only on Aishwarya’s outfit or appearance ignores the remarkable career, international respect and cultural legacy she has built over the years.
Raveena Tandon Questions Double Standards For Female Actors
Raveena further spoke about the double standards that exist in the way male and female actors are judged. She pointed out that women in the entertainment industry are often expected to remain frozen in time, while male actors are allowed to age naturally without facing the same level of criticism.
“It reveals a broader, everyday cultural double standard, like we demand our female stars remain permanently frozen in time, looking exactly like they did twenty years ago, while male actors are allowed to age, change, and grow without an ounce of the same brutal scrutiny,” she said.
The actress said this mindset reflects a larger cultural problem, where women are constantly measured against unrealistic standards of youth and beauty.
Raveena Tandon Urges Social Media Users To Reflect
Concluding her remarks, Raveena urged people online to be more mindful and respectful while speaking about women in the public eye. She said women should be allowed to live, age and express themselves on their own terms without being subjected to cruel commentary.
“It’s high time people online log off, look inward, and learn to respect women who are living their lives beautifully, maturely, and entirely on their own terms,” she said.
On the work front, Raveena Tandon was recently seen in Welcome To The Jungle.
