New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) has trained 56 women in geriatric care during a five-day programme in Diu aimed at strengthening community-based support for senior citizens, the Social Justice Ministry said on Tuesday.
Organised by the NISD’s Senior Citizen Division in collaboration with the Diu district administration, the programme concluded at the Government Education Hub in Kevdi on Tuesday.
The training programme was inaugurated on October 9 by Social Justice Ministry Secretary Sudhansh Pant, who emphasised the importance of compassionate caregiving and community support for India’s ageing population.
Pant also administered the Senior Citizen Pledge to sensitise participants about upholding the dignity,
safety and well-being of senior citizens.
The training equipped family caregivers, Anganwadi workers and frontline functionaries with essential knowledge and practical skills to address the needs of older persons.
The curriculum covered age-related health conditions, monitoring of vital signs, infection prevention, fall prevention, basic first aid, nutrition, medication-related support, mobility assistance, personal hygiene and safe transfer techniques.
It also addressed dementia awareness, psychosocial support, loneliness and social isolation, communication skills, and the prevention, identification and reporting of neglect, abuse and exploitation of senior citizens.
Participants were sensitised to the importance of privacy, dignity and respect in caregiving and familiarised with government schemes, institutional mechanisms and support services available to senior citizens.
The programme featured interactive lectures, practical demonstrations, exercises, case studies and experience-sharing sessions to help participants apply their learning in community settings.
The initiative aimed to develop a skilled and sensitised caregiving workforce and strengthen grassroots support mechanisms for dignified and compassionate care of senior citizens, the ministry said. PTI ADI RHL
