Traditionally, most pujas are observed after a day-long fast, and followers of Goddess Lakshmi maintain this fast throughout the day, breaking it only after completing the Lakshmi Puja in the evening. This practice symbolises devotion, purity, and reverence for the Goddess.
Preparations For Lakshmi Puja
- Hindu households often adorn their homes and workplaces with fresh marigold flowers and leaves from Ashoka, mango and banana plants on the day of Lakshmi Puja.
- It is considered highly auspicious to place a Mangalik Kalash topped with an unpeeled coconut on either side of the main entrance to welcome divine blessings.
- For the puja setup, place a red cloth on a raised platform to the right and install the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, dressing them in silk attire and decorating them with jewellery.
- On the left side, place a white cloth on a raised platform to install the Navagraha deities.
- Prepare nine slots of Akshata (unbroken rice) on the white cloth for the Navagrahas and sixteen slots of wheat or wheat flour on the red cloth for Goddess Lakshmi.
- Once the setup is complete, perform the Lakshmi Puja following the prescribed rituals as detailed in the Lakshmi Puja Vidhi to ensure the worship is complete and auspicious.
