Mohammed Shami underlined the value of relentless domestic cricket and meticulous fitness work as he powered Lucknow Super Giants to a vital IPL win on Sunday, delivering a clinical spell that underpinned the result.
“If you want to play, it’s important to be in touch with the game. If you’re fit, only then can you work on your skills. That’s why I kept in touch with the game and played all the domestic games,” Shami said while addressing the media after the IPL 2026 match no. 10, SRH vs LSG, match in Hyderabad.
The fast bowler, who produced outstanding figures of 2 for 9 and sent down 18 dot balls, said the side was determined to respond after stumbling in their previous outing.
He said the group was pleased with the response, pointing out that
regaining momentum quickly after a defeat was crucial in a long tournament.
“I’m happy. We lost our last game; winning this game was key to building momentum,” he said.
Shami reiterated that maintaining top physical condition gives a bowler the platform to refine his craft, which is why he prioritised regular appearances in domestic fixtures to keep his rhythm intact.
The experienced seamer further underlined that at the elite level of cricket, both technical ability and accumulated know-how are essential.
“Without skill or experience, nothing happens,” he remarked.
He went on to emphasise the need to read pitches and match situations accurately, explaining that he had consciously brought more slower deliveries into his repertoire after noticing how effective they could be.
Recalling his previous stint at the same venue with SRH, he said that familiarity with the conditions convinced him to lean heavily on variations, especially slower balls, having witnessed their impact earlier as well as their success for rival bowlers.
“But you have to adapt. I was here last year and used a lot of slower ones. Opponents use it a lot, I thought, why not us too,” he said.
