No Cases Against Protesters, Talks On Education Reforms: Govt Assurances Behind Sonam Wangchuk's Fast End

Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike after Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram and shared the government’s assurances on his demands.

Wangchuk broke his fast shortly after midnight on Thursday in the presence of the two Union ministers, his wife Gitanjali Angmo and other leaders.

During the meeting, Nadda read out the government’s assurances and said the Centre was committed to addressing concerns raised by the protesters.

Govt Assures Talks, Compensation Consideration

Nadda said the government was positive about not registering cases against those who had participated in peaceful protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and

those taking part in the proposed march to Parliament on July 20.

He also said the government had assured detailed discussions in Parliament on solutions to paper leaks and education reforms related to examinations.

“The government is positive on not registering cases against those protesting peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, and those participating in the march to the Parliament on July 20, 2026,” Nadda said while reading out the assurances.

He added that the government was also positively considering suitable compensation for the families of students who died by suicide following the NEET paper leak.

“The government has already assured threadbare discussions to find solutions to paper leaks and educational reforms for exams in the Parliament. Besides, the government is also positively considering suitable compensation for the suicide victims of recent NEET paper leaks,” he said.

Wangchuk had started his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in solidarity with students protesting over the alleged NEET paper leak. The protesters have been demanding education reforms and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

After ending his fast, Wangchuk said the decision came after “long negotiations” and concerns over possible violence in the country. He urged people to remain vigilant and avoid any form of violence.

The activist had been shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after being forcibly removed from the protest site. His hunger strike drew attention to demands related to examination reforms, accountability and changes in the education system.
