ChatGPT Down In India: OpenAI Says Sorry After Outage Hits For the Second Time Within 2 Days

ChatGPT has run into another outage, this time leaving users across the US and India unable to generate AI images. Reports flooded outage tracker Downdetector, with users describing trouble both accessing the chatbot and creating images through it.

OpenAI addressed the issue directly on X, acknowledging the image generation problem: “We know that a lot of you are having issues generating images in ChatGPT, and we’re working fast to fix it. Sorry about that.”

According to OpenAI’s status page, the company has identified the root cause and is now working on a fix. The status update read: “Image generation unavailable in ChatGPT. Investigating. Degraded performance. We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services.

We are working on implementing a mitigation.”

The second outage in two days

This isn’t an isolated incident. ChatGPT also went down on Saturday, July 25, making this the second disruption within just two days. Downdetector data from that earlier outage showed complaints spiking across multiple regions and platforms in a short span, with most issues affecting web users specifically.

In the US, more than 3,200 reports were filed, with 80 percent citing problems on the web platform, 8 percent reporting issues with the mobile app, and 8 percent flagging problems with Codex. The UK saw over 3,000 reports, concentrated heavily around London and Southampton. In India, nearly 1,500 reports came in, with close to 80 percent of affected users struggling specifically with the web interface.

During that earlier outage, both free and paid ChatGPT users reported getting stuck on blank loading screens, being logged out mid-conversation, or seeing “service unavailable” messages when submitting prompts. At the time, OpenAI said: “We’re currently experiencing issues… We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.”
