Indian Army Day is observed on January 15 every year to honour the courage, discipline and sacrifice of the soldiers who safeguard the nation’s borders. Indian Army Day marks an important moment in the country’s military history. On January 15, 1949, Lieutenant General K M Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the country’s armed forces. He succeeded General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, who was the last British commander, in the position.
The transition symbolised India’s control over its own defence forces after Independence. Since then, the day has been dedicated to recognising the leadership, bravery and service of Army personnel, both past and present.
Indian Army Day 2026: Significance
Each year, an Army Day parade is held to showcase India’s military strength,
discipline and new technology. Earlier, the parade was held annually in Delhi. For the past few years, every state has taken its turn in hosting the event.
The day is celebrated by announcing gallantry awards honouring brave soldiers for their exceptional service.
Across the country, schools, colleges, and institutions organise events, discussions and cultural programmes to spread awareness about the Army’s contribution.
Indian Army Day 2026 Parade
The first Indian Army Day parade that was hosted outside Delhi was in Bengaluru in 2023, in 2024, the parade took place in Lucknow, and in 2025 it was held at Pune. This year, the parade will be taking place in Jaipur.
Also, for the first time, the Army Day Parade is being held outside a cantonment and in a public area, like the Republic Day Parade in Delhi.
An official told TOI, “The Army Day Parade of this magnitude is only possible due to the assistance and cooperation of the civil administration. The Parade will enable showcasing the might of the Indian Army not just to the people of Jaipur, but also to the larger population of Rajasthan.”
The parade is expected to feature over 30 army entities, including Infantry Marching Contingents, Bhairav Battalions, drones, modern weapons, tanks, and more. An aerial pass featuring Army Aviation helicopters and Air Force jets is also expected.
