What is the story about?
In
today’s world, digital culture is increasingly associated with burnout, but it’s also nearly unavoidable. Karan Johar is the latest celebrity to address this issue, announcing a week-long social media hiatus on Monday night via Instagram Stories. He’s not the first to take such a break. While many choose to intentionally disconnect, for most people, simply turning off devices may not be the most practical solution.
The concept of a digital detox seems attractive, but really staying away from your phone or screens can be difficult. What do you do when the impulse to check notifications or surf through social media takes over?
Here are a few tips to help you prevent digital burnout through a more realistic approach:
- Start with small goals- Begin the first day by not looking at your phone for 15 minutes. The following day, unplug for 30 minutes. When you avoid using digital media and social platforms, you can work up to a half or full day every week. Alternatively, define three periods when phone use is authorised while the rest of the day is tech-free.
- Switch off notifications- Constantly being notified that you have a new email or text message can be beneficial, but it can also cause stress and pressure to answer immediately. Turning off notifications for emails, social media, and messages allows you to answer when you are available, rather than being constantly interrupted from other activities.
- Avoid phones when you wake up- Instead of using your phone as an alarm clock, go for a table clock. Also, avoid checking your phone for the first half hour you’re awake. Instead of staring at your phone, start your day with a self-care regimen, such as stretching and meditating for five minutes.
- Delete stressful apps- Consider whether any apps on your phone aren’t making you happy. If so, consider removing them. You can always add them back if you find yourself missing them.
- Find replacement activities- Many people reach out to their smartphones when they are bored or agitated. As a result, finding another way to distract your thoughts and occupy your hands can be critical during a digital detox. These replacement practices frequently include hobbies or activities that result in you being happy and content.
