A waiter at a popular bar-cum-restaurant on Kolkata’s Park Street has been arrested after an actor and YouTuber alleged he was served beef instead of mutton, triggering a police case and political reactions.
The incident occurred at Olypub, a long-established eatery in the city’s nightlife hub. According to the complaint, actor and social media influencer Sayak Chakraborty visited the restaurant on Friday night with two friends and ordered mutton steak. However, he alleged that the group was instead served beef, without being informed about the nature of the dish.
Sayak claimed the food was placed on the table without any explanation, leading the group to assume it was mutton, as ordered. They consumed the dish before realising the alleged mix-up. The issue surfaced when a second dish was brought to the table, which staff reportedly identified as mutton, indicating that the earlier serving had been beef.
In a video that later went viral, Sayak described the sequence of events and questioned restaurant staff over how such a mix-up could occur. The footage also shows a restaurant employee acknowledging that a mistake had been made. During the confrontation, Sayak invoked his religious identity, expressing outrage over being served beef after specifically ordering mutton.
Olypub, Park Street—one of Kolkata’s most iconic restaurants—is now at the centre of a deeply disturbing controversy.

Following the incident, Sayak left the restaurant and filed a complaint at the Park Street Police Station later that night. Based on the complaint, Kolkata Police registered a case and arrested one restaurant employee on Saturday.
Confirming the arrest, a senior police officer said one employee of a popular Park Street restaurant had been taken into custody on charges of serving beef instead of goat meat. “An investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was due to negligence, miscommunication, or something deliberate,” the officer added, noting that the role of other staff and management is also being examined.
The controversy gained traction after the video of the altercation circulated widely on social media. While Sayak later deleted the video from his own account, it continued to be shared and was subsequently reposted by BJP leader and lawyer Tarunjyoti Tewari, amplifying its reach.
The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the restaurant over the alleged incident. BJP leader Keya Ghosh said in a social media post that the blogger-actor and his friends were served beef despite ordering mutton, and that the error was later dismissed as a mistake by restaurant staff and management.
“Why are Hindus made a soft target?” she asked, adding that there would have been widespread outrage if a similar incident had involved another community.
