US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor arrived in India, formally beginning his tenure at a moment of heightened strain in India–US relations. Marking his arrival, Sergio Gor struck an upbeat tone in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!”
Sergio Gor, 38, previously served as White House personnel director before being named the next US envoy to India by US President Donald Trump in August. A close aide to Donald Trump with significant influence within the administration, Sergio Gor is expected to play a key role in shaping Washington’s India policy during a sensitive diplomatic phase.
He was confirmed by the US Senate in October and sworn in as ambassador in mid-November.
Ahead of his formal posting, Sergio Gor spent six days in India in October, during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
India–US ties have come under pressure following the Donald Trump administration’s decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian goods, including a 50 per cent duty on certain products and an additional 25 per cent levy linked to India’s imports of Russian crude oil. New Delhi has called the measures “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable” while negotiations continue on a possible trade agreement.
Donald Trump earlier described Sergio Gor’s appointment as a critical step in reinforcing bilateral ties.
“I’m trusting Sergio to help strengthen one of our country’s most important international relationships- the strategic partnership with India,” the US President said following Sergio Gor’s swearing-in.
