A Malayalam film currently running successfully in theatres has come under scrutiny following objections raised over a scene that allegedly references traditional Ayurvedic medicine in a misleading manner. The issue is linked to Vaazha 2, directed by Savin S A and written by Vipin Das. The film, titled Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros, has been doing well commercially since its release, but a particular scene has now sparked controversy.
The sequence, featuring actor Biju Kuttan’s character, is said to connect a medical condition with the consumption of arishtam, a traditional Ayurvedic preparation. This portrayal has been objected to by a section of Ayurveda practitioners, who argue that it does not accurately represent established medical practices.
The Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI) has reportedly taken a strong position on the matter, stating that the depiction could mislead the public and create confusion regarding Ayurveda-based treatments. The association has also indicated that it is planning to initiate legal action against the makers of the film over the scene in question. However, there has been no official response or clarification from the filmmakers so far.
Despite the controversy, the film’s commercial performance remains unaffected. Vaazha 2 continues to record strong numbers at the box office, with reported India net collections of around Rs 99.35 crore and a worldwide gross crossing Rs 191 crore. The film has also crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in Kerala within 15 days of its release on April 2, a milestone that the makers confirmed through their social media platforms.
Industry reports suggest that the film has achieved this feat faster than several recent Malayalam releases, including Thudarum, which reached the milestone in 19 days, and Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra, which did so in 24 days. This places the film among the faster entries into the Rs 100 crore club in the regional industry in recent times.
The film features a mix of emerging social media personalities and established actors, including Alphonse Puthren, Aju Varghese, Vijay Babu, and Sudheesh. Following its success, the makers have already announced a third instalment titled Vaazha 3, which is expected to focus on female characters and is being described as a “biopic of one billion girls,” with Vishnu Sreejith set to direct the project.
