Delhi Blast: The powerful explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening is being investigated as a terror attack, sources have told CNN-News18. Preliminary reports suggest that an Improvised
Explosive Device (IED) was used in the blast, which ripped through a slow-moving car around 6:52 pm, killing at least ten people, according to sources, and leaving several others injured.
According to sources, one suspect has already been detained and is currently being questioned by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell. The suspect is believed to have possible links to Jammu and Kashmir, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police is also on the spot. Security officials are not ruling out the possibility of a wider network being involved in planning and executing the attack.
The explosion occurred at a busy hour near the Red Fort Metro Station, a high-security zone and one of the most crowded parts of the capital. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as the car caught fire following the blast, with passersby rushing to help the injured before emergency services arrived.
Delhi Police sources have told CNN-News18 that the blast took place inside a Hyundai i20 car which had 2–3 occupants at the time of the explosion. The impact, officials said, was concentrated on the rear portion of the vehicle. There is no crater or flat spot at the site, suggesting that the car was slow-moving when the explosion occurred. Prima facie, investigators have not found any signs of pellet injuries on the victims, though burn wounds have been observed on several of them. Forensic teams are examining the vehicle to determine the exact nature and source of the blast.
Forensic teams and bomb disposal squads have been deployed to the site, while the area has been sealed off for detailed examination. CCTV footage from nearby shops, metro premises, and traffic cameras is being thoroughly scanned to identify any suspicious movements or vehicles in the vicinity before the explosion.
Top officials from the Delhi Police, NIA and the Ministry of Home Affairs are monitoring the situation closely. Investigators are now focusing on tracing the source of the explosives and determining whether the blast was part of a larger conspiracy targeting the national capital.
