Uttar Pradesh has secured a notable place in the national rankings for clean and environmentally sustainable schools, with 11 institutions from the state making it to the Government of India’s Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2025-26 list.
The rankings, released by the Department of School Education and Literacy, recognised schools for their performance in cleanliness, green infrastructure, water conservation, waste management and sustainable campus development. Of the 11 schools from Uttar Pradesh selected at the national level, six are government schools and two are Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs).
The achievement underscores the growing focus on improving learning environments in government-run schools, with several institutions
emerging as models of cleanliness and environmental stewardship.
Among the government schools featured in the national rankings are Primary School Italia Mafi in Sambhal (Rank 12), Primary School Chokhapur in Pilibhit (Rank 25), PMV Kanya Ganchapa in Chitrakoot (Rank 27), Primary School Sahajni in Bareilly (Rank 29), Composite School Aamgaon in Badaun (Rank 36) and Upper Primary School Kutubpur Labdaula in Saharanpur (Rank 55).
Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Hariharpur Rani in Shravasti secured Rank 9, while Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Konch in Jalaun was placed at Rank 14.
Other institutions from Uttar Pradesh that made the national list include Air Force School Manauri, Prayagraj (Rank 31) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Gajokhar, Varanasi (Rank 46). In the private school category, Dayawati Modi Academy-1, Meerut secured Rank 4.
A total of 191 schools were selected nationwide from 169,179 participating institutions. Uttar Pradesh had nominated 20 top-performing schools after a state-level evaluation, of which 11 secured a place in the final national rankings.
Schools were assessed on parameters including sanitation, water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management, green campus development and community participation. Officials said the performance reflects the impact of ongoing cleanliness drives, plantation campaigns, water conservation initiatives and school transformation programmes across the state.
The evaluation process involved self-assessment by schools through the SHVR portal, followed by district and state-level verification. The highest-performing institutions were then shortlisted for national evaluation through a digital and multi-stage review process.
Senior Construction Expert Shyam Kishore Tiwari attributed the achievement to the collective efforts of teachers, students, School Management Committees and the Education Department. He said the recognition would encourage more schools to adopt best practices in cleanliness, greenery and infrastructure development.
The Basic Education Department has also announced that the top 20 schools identified at the state level will be honoured to promote similar initiatives across Uttar Pradesh.
