US President Donald Trump has announced the removal of tariffs and trade restrictions on whisky imports from the United Kingdom, following a recent state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The decision, he said, was made as a gesture of respect for the royal couple and to support long-standing trade ties.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “In Honour of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whisky having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whisky and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky.”
whisky and bourbon industries. Trump also
pointed to the shared supply chain, particularly the use of wooden barrels, as a key reason behind the decision. “People have wanted to do this for a long time, in that there had been great Inter-Country Trade, especially having to do with the Wooden Barrels used,” he added.
Speaking during an executive order signing, Trump credited the royal visit for influencing the policy change. “The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful Honour to have them both in the USA,” he said. He further added, “I just took all the restrictions off so Scotland and Kentucky can start dealing again. And I did it in honour of the King and Queen who have just left.”
During their visit, King Charles III and Queen Camilla travelled to New York, where they paid tribute to victims of the September 11 attacks. They met families of victims and first responders at the memorial site. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former mayor Michael Bloomberg also attended the ceremony.
Earlier, the King addressed the US Congress, highlighting the importance of global unity and recalling the shared response to the 9/11 attacks. At a White House dinner, he stressed the value of the US-UK alliance, including cooperation through NATO and partnerships like AUKUS, especially in light of ongoing global challenges such as the war in Ukraine.
