A driving licence is not only a mandatory document for operating a vehicle on public roads but also serves several important purposes. Driving without a valid licence is illegal across India. In addition to permitting legal driving, it is widely accepted as proof of identity and address. Moreover, in the event of a road accident
, a valid driving licence is essential for processing vehicle insurance claims.Individuals aged 18 and above are eligible to apply for a driving licence. However, before obtaining a permanent licence, applicants must first secure a learner’s licence, which serves as the initial step in the licensing process.
Telangana Introduces New Licensing Rules
In Telangana, the government has introduced significant changes to the process of issuing driving licences. These
revised rules came into effect from April 1 and aim to enhance road safety and improve awareness among motorists.
The decision follows growing concerns over road safety in the state. Every year, more than 7,000 people lose their lives in road accidents, while nearly 28,000 others sustain injuries. Officials have identified reckless driving, overspeeding, and a lack of awareness about traffic regulations as the primary causes behind most accidents.
In response, the transport department has implemented new licensing norms in line with directions from the Supreme Court. Warangal Deputy Transport Commissioner Suresh Reddy noted that these measures are expected to play a crucial role in reducing accident rates.
Online Road Safety Training Module Introduced
A key feature of the revised system is the introduction of an online road safety awareness module. The training programme consists of six modules, each lasting 30 minutes, making a total duration of three hours.
These modules include lessons on traffic rules, video-based demonstrations, and comprehensive road safety education. At the end of each session, candidates are required to complete a short assessment to test their understanding.
The training can be completed remotely, allowing applicants to participate from home using a laptop or desktop equipped with a camera. Alternatively, candidates may access the modules through nearby driving schools, making the process convenient and widely accessible.
Practical Learning Through Real-Life Examples
The course content focuses on real-world scenarios, including the causes of accidents, common driving errors, and past case studies presented through videos. It also provides guidance on essential driving practices such as proper mirror adjustment, safe overtaking techniques, and overall road discipline.
Additionally, the modules highlight how accidents occur, identify responsibility, and illustrate the impact on victims and their families through real-life examples. Authorities believe that this approach will help new drivers better understand the consequences of unsafe driving.
Upon successfully completing the training and assessments, candidates receive a unique certificate number. This certificate is required to proceed with the learner’s licence test, marking the next stage in obtaining a full driving licence.
