For a couple who now look completely in sync — from Sonakshi Sinha’s relaxed YouTube vlogs to Zaheer Iqbal’s constant cheerleading — it’s easy to assume their bond was always effortless. But Sonakshi has
now admitted that the version of them people see today was shaped by a tough moment they almost didn’t survive.
Her latest conversation with Soha Ali Khan on a podcast pulled the curtain back on the one phase that changed everything.
Sonakshi spoke honestly about the period when things between her and Zaheer were at their worst, long before their intimate wedding last year. She said the friction built up slowly until both of them felt stuck. “We were three years into the relationship when we reached a phase where we wanted to pull each other’s hair out,” she said. “No matter what we did, we just couldn’t understand each other’s perspective. But in our hearts, we knew we had to make this work somehow. That’s when we decided to do couple’s therapy — and it was Zaheer who suggested it.”
What surprised her most was Zaheer’s attitude. He didn’t hesitate or push the issue away. Instead, he took the first step. “He told me, ‘I want this relationship to work, no matter what. I’ve heard about therapy, let’s just give it a shot.’ I agreed, and I’m so glad I did. Just two sessions later, we were back on track. It helped us understand how the other person thinks and that what they say isn’t always what they mean. Even tiny things — like recognising where your partner is coming from — changed everything.”
Soha reacted by pointing out how counselling only works when both partners want the relationship to succeed. “If you can remember them in moments when you’re triggered — when to calm down, what words not to use — it fixes communication. And communication works only when both people truly want to make it work.”
Despite dating for almost seven years, Sonakshi and Zaheer kept their relationship low-key until they married at home last year. Their interfaith ceremony sparked criticism amid trolls, but the two refused to engage with negativity and continued moving forward as a team.
