Taking into account the increasing number of passengers, three new maintenance tracks have been set up at Bandra Terminus. The three lines will substantially increase capacity for train movements and help
improve punctuality and operational flexibility. This enhancement is part of the current upgrades around the terminus. The upgrades aim to smooth train operations, improve passenger flow, and boost overall efficiency at this key long-distance terminal.
What the upgrade means
Earlier, Bandra Terminus had only three maintenance tracks. The WR has now added three more pit lines at Bandra Terminus, enabling maintenance of additional trains directly from the terminus. These upgrades are part of a broader plan to allow Vande Bharat trains to operate from Bandra Terminus, expanding premium service connectivity beyond the current base at Mumbai Central.
These new tracks also have advanced facilities for washing trains. Each track is 540 meters long and suitable for 24-coach passenger trains. Maintenance for LHB, ICF, and all other types of coaches will be done here.
Currently, about 800 coaches are maintained at the Bandra Terminus coaching depot. LHB coaches are serviced every 36 months, while ICF coaches are serviced every 18 months.
Skywalk connectivity
A 314-m skywalk now connects Khar Road suburban station to Bandra Terminus, helping passengers avoid road traffic and making transfers to the long-distance station easier. Additional skywalks, including one linking Bandra station directly to the terminus, have been proposed.
Parking facility
A new parking-cum-parcel storage facility beneath the elevated road near the terminus has been launched to meet rising commuter and logistics needs while generating additional revenue.
The plans for other termini
To increase the capacity of railway terminals, new tracks are being built at Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus, and the length of existing platforms is also being extended.
The new termini at Jogeshwari and Vasai Road are in their final stages of construction.
Of the three new tracks, the first was put into use in July 2024, and the remaining two were completed in December 2025. The entire project cost Rs 56 crore 76 lakh. With these new tracks, it will be possible to handle nine additional long-distance trains in the future.
