Sushmita Sen faced a challenging situation when Lalit Modi, the ex-IPL chairman, announced their relationship on social media. This revelation left many surprised, especially since she had confirmed her breakup with Rohman Shawl just a few months earlier. Many even started trolling Sushmita Sen and started calling her a “gold digger” for dating Lalit Modi.
Back then,Sushmita Sen called out these trolls via an Instagram post and wrote, The so called intellectuals with their idiosyncrasies….the ignorant with their cheap & at times funny gossip The friends I never had & the acquaintances I’ve never met….all sharing their grand opinions & deep knowledge of my life & character…monetising the ‘Gold Digger’ all the way!!!”
The actress added, “Ah these
geniuses!!! I dig deeper than Gold…and I’ve always (famously) preferred Diamonds!!❤️And yes I still buy them myself!!!” This wasn’t the only time that she addressed these allegations. Just a few months later, during Taali promotions, she said, “It’s good that those comments came to me and I could define ‘gold digger’.”
“An insult is an insult when you receive it, which I don’t. But there are certain things that are nobody’s business. I don’t need to say it’s no one’s business, but I like the word ‘not your business. It’s so cool,” she added, saying, “FYI, I am as single as they come, which is also NOYB.” She made this comment after their breakup.
Recently, in a chat with Humans Of Bombay, Lalit Modi also addressed these allegations and promptly rubbished them. Lalit said, “Sushmita, please understand, is a very beautiful and a very well-to-do lady. I don’t know if anybody knows this, but she has more diamonds than anybody I know on the planet. And she has earned it herself, and she has diamond stores. So she’s a very wealthy lady.”
He added, “She has done it all on her own. There wasn’t a time I went out with Sushmita that I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend… So when somebody says she’s a gold digger, no, Lalit was a diamond digger… I was hoping that I was a diamond digger as far as she was concerned, because she was truly a diamond… It was never about money.”
Lalit Modi said that their romance was very real. However, he revealed that they had to part ways due to the long distance between them. He praised Sushmita and called her a very special person. Calling her one of the most independent women he has known, he said the public perception of their relationship was completely wrong.
