Former Indian cricketer and commentator Ravi Shastri committed a gaffe at the toss, asking Gujarat Titans’ skipper Shubman Gill how he is approaching the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, with his team already having qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
Despite the team being in a strong position, Shastri made an on-air blunder while hosting the toss on Saturday night, saying that the Gill-led team had already qualified for the playoffs.
After Gill continued his brilliant toss-winning streak in IPL 2026 with yet another favourable coin flip, Shastri remarked that the Gujarat Titans already had a ‘Q’ next to their name, indicating qualification for the playoffs.
“You have got the Q alphabet already stamped against your team, how are you approaching
this one?” Shastri asked.
To Gill’s credit, he handled the slip-up without correcting it, instead steering the discussion towards the importance of positive results in GT’s remaining two games to bag a top-two finish and a place in Qualifier 1, which would give them two chances to reach the final if needed.
“It is about how the momentum is with us and we have to consistently keep doing the things that we have been doing well. This isn’t the stage or the time to take any team lightly, but we are hoping to win the next two and be stable in the top two positions,” Gill said.
Gill won the toss and opted to bowl first, backing GT’s outstanding record while chasing. The settled GT team went in unchanged, while KKR entered the must-win clash knowing their batting unit needed a big performance.
But Shastri’s prediction didn’t turn out in GT’s favour. KKR came out all guns blazing and after Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane added 44 runs for the opening stand, the former added another 95 runs with Angkrish Raghuvanshi to push KKR to a massive score.
