Nick Reiner, son of the late Rob and Michele Reiner, was reportedly struggling with schizophrenia before the tragic incident on December 14, in which he allegedly killed both of his parents. Recent reports

suggest that a new medication prescribed to him caused unexpected behaviours described as “erratic and dangerous.” Nick had previously been in a treatment facility, and just three to four weeks before the tragedy, doctors changed his prescription in an attempt to better manage his condition.

Unfortunately, his behaviour worsened, and medical professionals continued to adjust his medication dosage without success. Sources reveal that his struggles were further complicated by drug abuse. Those close to Nick described him as being “out of his head” during this difficult period.

Nick Reiner’s Mental Health Struggles

Sources familiar with the case told TMZ that Nick Reiner was seeing a psychiatrist to help manage his mental health issues. They explained that, in the month leading up to the incident, his behaviour had become “alarming.” Nick had even stayed at a rehab centre in Los Angeles that specialises in treating both mental health disorders and substance abuse.

The centre reportedly charges $70,000 a month and is often used by wealthy families for their children facing similar struggles. Those close to the situation also revealed that Nick is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity in court, arguing that his mental illness influenced his actions.

First Degree Murder Charges And Legal Consequences

As per a New York Times report, Nick Reiner is now facing two first-degree murder charges for the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. In California, a sentence for such murder usually means life in prison, with a chance of parole after 25 years. However, because of the way the Los Angeles County District Attorney filed the case, Nick could face the death penalty.

The day before the tragedy, the family had attended a Christmas party at comedian Conan O’Brien’s home, which was attended by people from the entertainment world and neighbours. At the party, Nick acted strangely and made others worried with his unusual behaviour. His father even told him that his actions were not appropriate for a guest and tried to calm him down. This shows that his behaviour was already concerning before the incident at home.
