Khamenei said Iran would respond strongly to recent attacks and signalled a shift in its approach to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, as per an official statement read out on state television.
“Iran will seek retribution for attacks on it, will take management of Strait of Hormuz into a new phase. Iran is resolute in taking revenge of its late Supreme Leader and its ‘martyrs’,” he said, according to Iran’s state TV.
Notably, Khamenei has not appeared in public, and the message was conveyed only through an official statement, without any direct address or appearance.
Meanwhile, his statement also came on the same day that Israel carried out fresh strikes in Lebanon, prompting a strong reaction from Iran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday criticised Israel over the renewed attacks, despite a ceasefire agreement that has been in place for the past two weeks to reduce tensions in West Asia. In a post on X, Pezeshkian said the strikes were a clear violation of the ceasefire and described them as an indication of deception and a lack of commitment to agreements.
He warned that the continued attacks could derail ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict, and cautioned that such actions may push Iran towards taking serious measures in response.
