New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) The UN’s mid-year climate meetings in Bonn, Germany, kicked off on Monday, inaugurating the formal negotiation process that will lead to the UN Climate Change Conference of Parties in Turkey in November.
Known as the UN June Climate Meetings — formally called the 64th sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies under the UNFCCC (SB64) – will be held over 10 days, ending on June 18.
While the mid-year climate meetings shape the agenda, a Conference of Parties (COP) is where the final agenda is announced.
In his opening remarks on Monday, UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell said, “We do not have time to re-open past debates or renegotiate commitments already made. Because we hear the frustrations of those denied the benefits of climate action
now. And we are witnessing the imperative to accelerate now, as deadly heat kills thousands in a single day.” The Indian delegation is also part of these negotiations and comprises officers from various ministries and departments, including scientists from the Environment Ministry.
Sources said a team comprising diplomats, ministry officers and climate experts is attending the subsidiary body meetings physically, while other delegates are attending virtually.
This arrangement has been put in place to ensure India’s effective participation in all negotiations, according to the sources. PTI ALC PRK
