The long-awaited solar-powered rope car project along Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach is finally moving closer to reality, with tenders for construction likely to be floated soon, Chennai Commissioner J
Kumaragurubaran said.
The update came during a recent city council meeting in response to a query from Ward 104 councillor T. V. Semmozhi, who first proposed the idea in 2022, as per reports.
Semmozhi said the rope car would not only give visitors a spectacular aerial view of the Marina coastline but would also significantly boost tourism in Chennai.
What’s The Ropeway Project?
Envisioned as a tourism booster and eco-friendly transport solution, the ropeway will span roughly five kilometres and will include stations at Anna Square, Kannagi Statue, Vivekananda House, and Light House, as per the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
Powered entirely by solar energy, the system will operate at an elevation of about 25 feet, offering passengers panoramic views of the Marina promenade and the Bay of Bengal.
GCC officials said the project is expected to serve not just tourists but also daily commuters, especially given the presence of major institutions and government offices along Kamarajar Salai, including Queen Mary’s College and the University of Madras.
Once completed, the solar-powered ropeway will be one of the first of its kind in the state.
