Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar- the visionary creator of the iconic 1987 television series ‘Ramayan’ – passed away on February 13, 2026. He was 84. According to NDTV, he had been unwell for the past 10-12 years and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. His last rites were held in Mumbai today at 4.30 pm, at Hindu Smashan Bhumi, Pavan Hans, Mumbai. His family members confirmed the heartbreaking news and expressed deep grief over his demise.

Anand Ramanand Sagar’s family members announced the heartbreaking news of his death through a post on social media. “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear father Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra.”
They further added the details of the funeral which took place today at Hindu Smashan Bhumi in Mumbai. “Your prayers and blessings for his peaceful journey are sincerely appreciated. Sagar family,” read the statement.

A member of the legendary Sagar family, Anand Sagar Chopra carried forward the mythological production Ramayan (2008), continuing his father Ramanand Sagar’s work, which transformed Indian television viewership in the 1980s. Apart from direction, he also produced several movies such as Aankhen, Armaan, and Alif Laila.

Ramanand Sagar was married to Leelavati Sagar and had five children — sons Subhash Sagar, Moti Sagar, Prem Sagar, and Anand Sagar, and daughter Sarita Sagar. Ramanand Sagar began his career in the 1940s as a writer, contributing to successful films such as Barsaat, before moving on to direct acclaimed films like Charas (1976) and Prem Bandhan (1979).
In the 1980s, he transitioned to television and created landmark mythological series including Ramayan, Luv Kush, Shri Krishna, and Vikram Aur Betaal, redefining storytelling on the Indian small screen.
