After days of uncertainty and a last-minute delay, Akhanda 2 has locked in a new theatrical release date. The makers of the Nandamuri Balakrishna-starrer have confirmed that the film will now arrive in cinemas on December 12, a week after its abrupt postponement.
Production banner 14 Reels Plus made the announcement on Tuesday night through its official X handle, sharing a fresh poster of the film. Along with it, the makers wrote, “All set for the Divine Destruction at the box office 🔥
Feel the MASSive power of #Akhanda2 in theatres from ???????????????????????????????? ???????? with grand premieres on December 11th BOOKINGS OPEN SOON!”
The update comes after the film’s scheduled December 5 release was called off just hours before it was set to
hit screens. At the time, the sudden decision left fans shocked. Issuing a statement on X, distributor 14 Reels Plus apologised for the delay and acknowledged the disappointment caused. The post stated, “We’ve tried our absolute best to bring #Akhanda2 to the big screens, but despite our tireless efforts, sometimes, the most unexpected things happen, and unfortunately, this is that time. We sincerely apologize to all the fans and cinema lovers across the world who have been eagerly waiting for the film with so much anticipation.”
The statement further read, “We are forever grateful to our dearest ‘God of Masses’ #NandamuriBalakrishna Garu and #BoyapatiSreenu Garu for standing by us during this challenging moment. AKHANDA-2 WILL HIT THE BULLSEYE WHENEVER IT ARRIVES…COMING VERY SOON WITH A NEW DATE.”
While no official reason was cited initially, industry sources pointed to a long-pending legal dispute as the cause of the delay. Eros International Media Limited had moved the Madras High Court over arbitration dues owed by 14 Reels Entertainment Private Limited for nearly 11 years, amounting to ₹28 crore plus interest. The release is believed to have been cleared after progress in the case, reportedly a day before the new date was announced. The postponement had followed a Madras High Court order in favour of Eros.
Titled Akhanda 2: Thaandavam, the film is a sequel to the 2021 blockbuster Akhanda, directed by Boyapati Srinu. Along with Balakrishna, the cast includes Samyuktha, Aadhi Pinishetty, and Harshaali Malhotra. Music for the film has been composed by Thaman S, with the soundtrack receiving a positive response from fans.
According to a Deccan Chronicle report, Balakrishna has also stepped in to help resolve financial hurdles. The actor has reportedly agreed to adjust ₹20 crore from his remuneration towards clearing pending dues, a sum said to be around 17 per cent of his total fee, to ensure the film’s smooth release.
