The sands of time are shifting once again as Universal Pictures officially confirms that The Mummy 4 is rising for a 2028 theatrical debut. In a move that has ignited nostalgia across the globe, Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reunite, reclaiming their iconic roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. This fourth installment in the beloved franchise is slated for a wide release on May 19, 2028, and will be available in both standard theaters and IMAX.
The franchise, which roared to life with the 1999 original and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, last saw Fraser in 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Now, the reins have been handed to the acclaimed “Radio Silence” duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are fresh
off successes in the horror-action genre. Working from a script by David Coggeshall, the directors aim to blend the classic adventure fans adore with a fresh, modern intensity.
According to Variety, the official commitment to bring back Fraser and Weisz was the catalyst for the project’s greenlight. Fans have long campaigned for the duo’s return, and their involvement ensures that the heart of the original trilogy remains intact.
While the O’Connells are back, the tone of the fourth film appears to lean into the macabre. A teaser unveiled last month introduced an “audacious and twisted retelling” of the mythos. The footage opens on the discovery of a mysterious wrapped body surrounded by frantic photographers before shifting to the rise of an ancient evil force. The clip concludes on a chilling note, showing a spider emerging from a mummified corpse.
The film’s official logline adds a psychological layer to the supernatural horror: “The young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace–eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
Produced under the banners of New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Blumhouse, the film also benefits from the expertise of masters like James Wan and Jason Blum. With a cast that includes Jack Reynor and May Calamawy alongside the returning leads, The Mummy 4 is shaping up to be the cinematic event of Summer 2028.
