A classic shawarma never disappoints. This Middle Eastern snack, especially popular in Lebanon, has quickly garnered appreciation across the globe, particularly in India. The flavours balanced through
layers hit home right after the first bite. Shawarma, typically made with soft, pliable flatbreads like pita, shakshuka or lavash are filled with smoked-spiced meat, an assortment of creamy sauces and crunchy veggies, making a delicious experience. But in a world where food experiments have become the norm, shawarma has also undergone an uncanny fusion.
A video from a shop named Waff’s Street in Janakpuri, Delhi, has grabbed the attention of foodies on Instagram. The clip, posted by a food vlogger, shows the vendors making an odd variation of the traditional shawarma by adding sweet notes.
Delhi Vendor Makes Sweet Shawarma
First, the vendor poured the creamy, crepe-style batter into a tawa and cooked it until golden brown before spreading a generous portion of chocolate syrup. Next, two types of sponge cakes were stacked on a vertical spit, similar to how meat is layered for the shawarma. Once done, the cakes were shaved off in small chunks with a scalpel and added to the crepe.
After that, he drizzled some more chocolate sauce, followed by a few dollops of fresh cream and rolled the crepe before finally topping the sweet shawarma with chocolate chips and serving it to the vlogger. The price? Rs 230. As per the text overlay, he visited the outlet for the “first time”.
Internet Reacts To Sweet Shawarma
“Aant karib hai guys (The end is near, guys),” commented a disappointed user. “Isse acha cake kharid ke khaa lu (It is better to have cake instead),” revealed another. “RIP shawarma,” wrote an upset foodie. “Diabetes is on the way,” pointed out an individual
“What is the point? Invention ke naam pe kuch bhi? (Anything in the name of invention?)” asked one critic. “Food department walo ko kuch krna chaiye aise logo ka (The food department should take action against such people),” read a disapproving remark. Begging to differ, someone else found the preparation “unique”.
