India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 13.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,94,812 crore in June, coming close to the Rs 2 lakh crore milestone. The strong growth was largely driven by a sharp rise in GST collections from imports, which offset relatively moderate growth in domestic revenues.
Import GST Drives Growth
Gross GST revenue from domestic transactions stood at Rs 1,34,774 crore, up 6.5 per cent from the same month last year. Meanwhile, GST collections from imports jumped 34.6 per cent to Rs 60,038 crore, emerging as the biggest contributor to the overall increase in tax collections.
After adjusting for refunds, net GST collections increased 11.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,62,377 crore, compared with Rs 1,45,984 crore in June last year.
Refunds Rise Sharply
The
government also stepped up the pace of refund processing during the month. Total GST refunds issued rose 29.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 32,436 crore.
Domestic refunds surged 42.9 per cent to Rs 17,767 crore, while export-related refunds processed through ICEGATE increased 15.6 per cent to Rs 14,669 crore.
GST Collections in Q1 FY27
For the April-June quarter of FY27, gross GST collections stood at Rs 6.32 lakh crore, marking an 8.4 per cent increase over Rs 5.83 lakh crore collected in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Net GST revenue during the first quarter rose 7.1 per cent to Rs 5.40 lakh crore, reflecting steady growth in tax collections despite higher refund outgo.
State-Wise Performance
Among major states, Uttar Pradesh posted one of the strongest performances with 19 per cent growth in domestic GST collections. Assam followed with 17 per cent growth, while Punjab recorded 14 per cent. Gujarat reported 12 per cent growth, followed by Telangana and Kerala at 11 per cent each, and Karnataka at 10 per cent. Maharashtra, India’s largest GST-contributing state, registered 9 per cent growth.
However, collections weakened in some states. Tamil Nadu saw a 2 per cent decline, while Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh each recorded a 5 per cent fall in domestic GST collections compared with a year earlier.
