The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) met in Dhaka on Saturday to review cricketing ties with India. The discussion focused on future tours, cooperation, and restoring regular engagement between the two boards.
The session, chaired by BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul, came shortly after the board had dispatched a communication to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding upcoming bilateral tours and potential areas of cooperation.
BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim said that the email, sent as part of routine engagement, outlined the Indian men’s team’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh in September, followed by the Bangladesh women’s team’s tour of India. The letter also proposed exploring further reciprocal cricket collaborations between
the two nations.
But this recent outreach follows a period of significant strain in bilateral cricketing relations. Earlier in the year, the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, acting on instructions from the BCCI, released Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from its 2026 squad.
The decision prompted a strong reaction from Bangladeshi authorities and the public. The BCB even requested that its matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 be relocated from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.
The International Cricket Council rejected the request, stating there was no credible threat to the Bangladesh players. Subsequently, Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland in the tournament.
The impasse was eventually resolved after the BCB avoided a financial penalty and secured hosting rights for an ICC event in 2028.
What has led to a change in the Bangladeshi stance?
Following the general elections held on February 12, the new government in Bangladesh has taken steps to improve relations with India. The previous interim regime, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was considered to be carrying feelings of antagonism against India and was much closer to Pakistan.
In Bangladesh, the government carries a certain influence on the cricket board, so the messaging since the regime change has been about the restoration of the India-Bangladesh ties.
