Over the years, Alia Bhatt has established herself as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated and bankable stars, earning widespread acclaim for her performances. As the actress gears up for the release of her upcoming film Alpha, she continues to enjoy immense support from fans. However, alongside the admiration, Alia has also found herself at the receiving end of criticism and online negativity in recent times. Addressing the issue, her mother, Soni Razdan, recently spoke about the trolling directed at the actress and shared her thoughts on the backlash surrounding Alia’s appearance at Cannes 2026.
During a recent interview with Zoom, Soni Razdan defended her daughter Alia Bhatt against criticism linked to her film-industry background. She argued
that Alia cannot be blamed for being born into a family connected to cinema. The veteran actress also pointed out that despite being an outsider herself, she did not achieve the same level of stardom as her daughter, emphasizing that Alia’s success is a result of her talent, dedication, and years of hard work.
She said, “Alia can’t help whose child she is; it’s not her fault. I was not a product of the industry; I struggled as an actor and human being to come into this industry, and I am not even half or quarter as successful as many other women of my time. Also, the world does not owe you a living if you want to make it in the industry, and you are going to complain… When I came in, 101 people were children of people who were already in the industry. I didn’t even think about it. If I think about that, how will I do what I wanted to? So I was focused on what I was doing. Why don’t people do that? It’s very easy for people to blame; there is nothing fair about this world.”
Soni Razdan acknowledged that Alia Bhatt may have received an opportunity to audition for her debut film because of her background, but stressed that everything she achieved afterward was the result of her own efforts. She maintained that being the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan was not something Alia should be criticized for. Razdan pointed out that while the initial audition opportunity may have come her way, securing the role and building a successful career required talent and perseverance. She added that had Alia failed to impress during the audition, she would not have landed the part, emphasizing that each milestone in her career was earned through consistent hard work and merit.
Her mother also reacted to the hate that Alia received after her Cannes appearance this year. She said, “Just because there is some noise on a social media platform, that doesn’t reflect the actual reality on the ground. It’s a reality we face every day. Everyone who went to Cannes was there for a reason, and they were representing their country. Everybody was invited because they achieved something in the global arena, they weren’t there by accident. If they are there, it means they are already being recognised. We should not waste our energy on giving importance to negativity, which doesn’t deserve our attention. As people in the business, you come and do your work, and go.”
Meanwhile, Alpha, starring Alia and Sharvari, is set to release on July 3.
