Ballia (UP), Aug 28 (PTI) Two men from Bihar who allegedly stole women’s jewellery on the pretext of cleaning them were arrested following an encounter here, police said on Friday.
In the encounter that took place late Thursday night, one of them sustained a gunshot wound on his right leg, they said.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Dinesh Kumar Shukla, a Bhimpura Police patrol team received information about the movement of the two men around 11.45 pm.
Acting on the tip-off, the team intercepted the suspects near Premraja village on the Ibrahim Patti-Udharan road. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the police team with the intention to kill, and police retaliated in self-defence, Shukla said.
One of the suspects, identified
as Arvind Soni (42), a resident of Panchveer under Sahebpur Kamal police station in Bihar’s Begusarai district, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was arrested and admitted to the Community Health Centre in Nagra for treatment.
His alleged associate, Pankaj Soni (19), also from Panchveer, was arrested from the spot, the officer said.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police that they travelled from village to village and stole women’s ornaments by posing as those who cleaned jewellery and old brass utensils, the officer said.
Police recovered a country-made pistol, one live cartridge and one empty cartridge of the same bore, stolen jewellery, Rs 15,600 in cash and a motorcycle from their possession. PTI COR CDN RUK RUK
