In Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj hospital, a tense labour room scene shocked everyone as an elderly woman began aggressively yelling and shouting at her daughter-in-law who was in the middle of delivering a child.
Labour pain is already physically and emotionally challenging at the time and presence of a controlling member can make the experience even more difficult. In this case, instead of support, the pregnant woman faced criticism and harsh commands from her mother-in-law. The incident left people shocked who criticised the mother-in-law’s behaviour and questioned the husband’s silence in defending his wife.
Mother-in-Law’s Shouts: ‘Shut Up Or…’
The elderly woman repeatedly pressed for a natural delivery even though doctors insisted for a caesarean
section. In the video, she can be heard shouting, “Shut up or I’ll break your mouth. How will you become a mother if you keep on crying like this?” She also objected to the daughter-in-law holding her husband’s hand, saying, “Chordo uska hath, chordo (Let go of his hand, let go).”
Her tone shifted between anger and teasing. At one point, she even smiled and joked, “Gala dab denge (We will press your throat)” and the granddaughter-in-law laughed along. Meanwhile, the medical staff attempted to intervene and insisted on a C-section but the elderly woman remained adamant about normal delivery.
Doctor’s Advice
Gynaecologist Dr Naaz Fatima, who shared the video on Instagram, highlighted the importance of empathy during such times. She wrote, “Is time pe pyaar se baat karna hota hai (One should speak lovingly at this time).”

Viewers Slam Mother-in-Law’s Behaviour
The video drew strong reactions online. Many criticised the mother-in-law for her harsh behavior while others also pointed out the husband’s silence during the ordeal.
One user commented, “They cannot bear to see their son holding hands with his wife even in a labour room.”
Another remarked, “Hard to watch a pregnant woman being disrespected and no one saying a word. Another reminder that not every elder deserves respect. Age doesn’t automatically make you wise or kind. Being older doesn’t give you the right to be rude or for people who are saying that she is joking and having fun (I am sorry she just gave birth to a baby, it’s not the right to joke around her). Being old is not a free pass for bad behaviour.”
“You all see a problematic saas (mother-in-law), I see a problematic husband who had failed to take stand for his wife. He has failed as a husband to every extent,” a person pointed out.
Someone else said, “How inhumane? She’s going through pain but still smiling, how helpless! Dadi amma never got love from her husband and now she’s jealous because the husband is holding her hands.”
“This video was already traumatising and then I saw men commenting with heart emojis and saying daant nahi pyaar hai (it’s not scolding, it’s love). I feel sorry for their wives,” read another comment.
The Prank Twist
Towards the end of the video, the tension takes an unexpected turn when the hospital staff brings in the newborn child. It is revealed that her son and granddaughter-in-law were playing a prank on her and she was not informed that the woman had already given birth to a baby boy.
