If you thought Karthik Gattamneni’s Mirai was done with Manchu Manoj’s antagonist Mahabir Lama, aka Black Sword, you may have a surprise waiting. The film is roaring at the box office, with a whopping collection of Rs 100 crore worldwide in just five days. While fans are celebrating Teja Sajja’s heroic Vedha, many are still thinking about the fate of Mahabir.
So, is Black Sword really dead? Or is he set for a grand comeback in the future installments? Manoj himself has dropped some intriguing hints in a chat with Hindustan Times. During the interaction, he revealed how even his son Dhairav refused to accept Black Sword’s death. Teasing the return of his character, Manoj shared, “My son had so many questions after we came back home from the screening.
He asked if Rama killed Black Sword. I said, ‘Did you see him die?’ He said, ‘No’, but there was a blast.”
Black Sword Vanquished
At the climax of Mirai, Mahabir gains control of the nine grandhas (ancient texts) left behind by Emperor Ashoka, making him nearly invincible. Just when Vedha is about to sacrifice himself, his weapon Mirai transforms into Lord Rama’s bow Kodanda. Vedha fires a mighty arrow, leading to a massive blast. The screen goes silent and the villain is seemingly vanquished. But here’s the twist, Mahabir’s body is never shown again.
‘He Has A Shield’: Manchu Manoj
Manoj, in the same chat, even explained a key element from the story that may have been missed by many viewers. Highlighting the same, he added, “A lot of people seemed to forget that the nine grandhas make him unbeatable. I said, yes, but he has a shield. He should be alive because he already has the ninth book.”
For Manoj, the epic is only just getting started. Drawing parallels to mythology, he went on, “Ravana, who also had amrit (nectar) like Mahabir, could not be beaten with a single arrow from Lord Rama; there was a war waged to beat him. Shriya Saran and Jagapathi Babu’s characters also mention a war that hasn’t even happened yet.”
Manoj shared that his son was quick to piece together the clues. Before signing off, he dropped major hints about the upcoming installments and said, “When Vedha shot the arrow, did he hit Mahabir’s leg or head? Ravana could only be beaten when shot in the navel. There are so many questions left unanswered for my character and the film as a whole. Karthik has big plans for Mahabir in the franchise,” teased the actor.
Mirai was released in theatres on September 12.
