A city council meeting in the US has gone viral after an Indian-American activist strongly responded to anti-India remarks during a public discussion. This incident occurred in Frisco, Texas, where Neha Suratran dealt with issues connected with the current H-1B visa controversy and allegations of Indians posing a threat to the community. In the widely shared video clip Suratran provides a data-driven answer. “Statistically, the Indian community is associated with higher education, higher income, and lower crime rates,” she said during the meeting. “So if a group is associated with safer communities, stronger schools, and higher economic contribution, why are we afraid?” She went on to frame the issue in terms of broader social impact, adding
that such communities contribute positively to neighbourhoods and public systems. “If your goal is for your children to grow up in safe neighbourhoods, high-performing schools, stable communities, then this is not something to fear, this is something to welcome,” she said. Addressing concerns around cultural identity, Suratran also spoke about integration and coexistence. “We also celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are not forcing religion onto you,” she said, adding that cultural visibility should not be mistaken for imposition. The video is getting a lot of attention on social media, with many people appreciating the woman’s reaction as calm and articulate response to bigotry. The social media responses emphasized on aspects of living together and contributions. For instance, several people noted that professionals from India contribute to the economy and build infrastructure through the services rendered by them in areas including medicine, technology, and engineering among others. Some also regarded her reaction as a demonstration of the need for mutual respect in multi-cultural societies.
