For an actor who has carefully guarded her on-screen boundaries for decades, even a small shift can spark curiosity. And when it comes to Kajo, known as much for her strong screen presence as her personal conviction, her recent revelation has got people talking again.
After nearly 30 years in the Hindi film industry, Kajol made a notable departure from her long-standing no-kissing rule in her OTT debut, The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha. The series, which released in 2023, saw her share a kiss with co-actor Jisshu Sengupta, a first in her career.
Speaking about the decision on YouTube personality Lilly Singh’s podcast, Kajol explained that the moment wasn’t included for shock value, but was deeply tied to the narrative. She said, “Honestly, it was the season
that I was playing. It had so much to do with the character and who she was. It wasn’t simply a kiss; it was about what she thought and what she wanted to happen and what didn’t happen for her. What she believed, what she had faith in. What she couldn’t have faith in. It was something that was an integral part of the entire screenplay, so I couldn’t have cut that out without cutting an integral part of the entire character.”
The actor also admitted that agreeing to the scene wasn’t easy. Reflecting on her state of mind during filming, she said, “I think I was uncomfortable with it. I was very, very uncomfortable with the idea till I was standing on set. I liked it in theory and wasn’t sure whether I was actually going to do it or tell them, ‘Cut! This is not happening!’ But, I really think it was simply that, it was simply a professional call where I felt that I can make this call today.”
Kajol’s role in the courtroom drama marked her digital debut, where she played Noyonika Sengupta, a homemaker who returns to her legal career following her husband’s scandal. The show, directed by Suparn Verma, is the Indian adaptation of the acclaimed series The Good Wife and also features Alyy Khan and Sheeba Chaddha in key roles.
Beyond the scene itself, Kajol spoke about her approach to decision-making over the years. She shared that she has always been clear about her choices, even during the early phase of her career when she was often candid to a fault. That honesty, she admitted, sometimes landed her in tricky situations, but it also helped her stay focused on her work.
Season 2 of The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha released last year and is currently streaming on JioHotstar.
