Pilibhit (UP), Sep 4 (PTI) The body of a farmer was found in a water-filled pit beside a railway line here on Friday, two days after he went missing, police said.
The family of the farmer, identified as Dharmendra Kumar, claimed that he committed suicide due to financial distress and the loss of his paddy crop. Police, however, said the exact cause of death will be established after the investigation has been completed.
Pilibhit District Magistrate Gyanendra Singh told PTI that according to information received, Dharmendra entered a pond to collect lotus seeds after consuming alcohol and drowned.
He said there appeared to be no substance in the family’s suspicion, though the investigation was underway.
Station House Officer, Neuria, Digambar Singh,
said the body had been sent for post-mortem.
According to Dharmendra’s family, he left home on Wednesday evening saying he was going to inspect his fields. They filed a missing person’s report after he did not return home.
The family said they depend on daily-wage labour to sustain themselves and Dharmendra was worried after the paddy crop was damaged. PTI COR CDN DIV DIV
