US Vice President JD Vance outlined strategic benefits from the recent military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying the move could strengthen American energy access, expand US leverage in foreign policy and demonstrate military prowess. JD Vance argued that the action would benefit ordinary Americans by reinforcing US control and influence in the region.
Energy Security: Control Over Venezuela’s Vast Resources
Central to JD Vance’s argument is the idea that the United States will now be able to control Venezuela’s energy resources, in a country that holds some of the world’s largest crude reserves. He said control over those resources would give the US leverage and help secure access to high-quality,
low-cost power for Americans. The emphasis comes as the Donald Trump administration moves to seize sanctioned tankers and regulate Venezuelan oil sales. White House officials have said Venezuela can sell its oil only if it serves US interests.
Geopolitical Leverage: Using Resources As Pressure Points
JD Vance argued that control over Venezuelan oil and other resources gives the US leverage in international relations, allowing Washington to influence nations that might otherwise act against American interests. He suggested that controlling these economic “purse strings” enables pressure without risking lives or extensive military engagement. This approach aligns with broader efforts by the US government to dictate the terms under which Venezuelan oil can enter global markets, insisting such sales must benefit American strategic goals.
Military Strength: Signalling US Power To The World
Beyond economic and diplomatic gains, JD Vance said the operation sends a message about American military strength. He argued that demonstrating a “very strong sword,” meaning credible force, is among the best ways to maintain peace because it deters adversaries from challenging the US in the future.
