When it comes to weight loss, cycling and running (or jogging) are two of the most popular aerobic exercises. But the big question many people ask is: Which burns more calories — cycling or running? Let’s break it down.
Why Aerobic Exercise Matters
Losing weight is often tougher than fighting a battle, and people try everything from dieting to supplements. But one crucial factor often gets ignored — exercise. To reduce stored body fat, regular physical activity is essential.
Among various workout options, aerobic exercises are considered the most effective. They burn calories efficiently without putting excessive strain on the body. Cycling and running are two widely preferred aerobic workouts. But which one delivers better weight-loss results?
Benefits Of Cycling And Running
“Both running and cycling are excellent aerobic exercises that can aid weight loss,” explained Dr Paras Aggarwal, Director, Obesity & Metabolic Disorders, Asia Marengo Hospital, Gurugram.
Aerobic activities strengthen the heart, help it pump more oxygen, and improve overall metabolism. As a result, the body converts calories into energy more efficiently, helping maintain a healthy weight. Workouts like running and cycling also train the heart to function better.
How Does Running Help?
According to Dr Aggarwal, running is a high-intensity workout that engages the entire body. It boosts lung capacity and improves the body’s ability to take in and utilise oxygen. This leads to higher calorie burn.
For example, a 70-kg person jogging at a moderate pace for 30 minutes can burn around 400 calories. Increasing speed raises calorie burn even further. Running provides a full cardio workout and has significant benefits for overall health.
Is Cycling Helpful?
Cycling is effective too. A person cycling at a moderate speed burns about 300 calories in 30 minutes. Faster cycling increases calorie expenditure.
But does cycling burn more calories than running — or vice versa?
Which Is More Effective for Weight Loss?
The effectiveness of either activity depends on how many calories you burn and what your fitness goals are. Generally, running burns more calories than cycling in the same amount of time. However, that doesn’t automatically mean running is the better choice for everyone.
In India, many people struggle with belly fat. For such individuals, running may offer quicker results because it engages the core more intensely, whereas cycling places less pressure on the abdominal area.
Consider Your Health Condition
Your physical condition also plays a significant role. Running puts more stress on the knees, hips, and ankles. If you suffer from knee pain, bone issues, or osteoporosis, running may worsen the problem. In such cases, walking or cycling is a safer and more suitable option.
Ultimately, the choice between cycling and jogging depends on your health, comfort level, and fitness goals. Choose an exercise that suits your body and perform it regularly to achieve sustainable weight control and better overall health.
