Two decades ago, Indian television witnessed a revolution in the form of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, a show that broke every rule of how a heroine “should” look or behave on screen. Jassi wasn’t glamorous,
she wasn’t polished, and she wasn’t trying to fit in. Yet she became a national obsession. Her braces, her fringe, her oversized glasses and her quiet resilience became iconic. For an entire generation, Jassi represented the girl who wins on merit, kindness, and grit, not because she fits the mould.
Even today, the show lives in nostalgia. Fans still quote dialogues, hum the title track, and debate whether Indian TV has ever created a character as relatable and revolutionary as Jassi. So naturally, whispers of a revamp have sparked excitement, curiosity, and a good dose of “but how will they ever recreate that magic?”
In an exclusive chat with CNN-News18 Showsha, Mona Singh opened up about what a reimagined Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin could look like, and her answer takes an unexpectedly stylish turn.
“I don’t know how she’ll be like,” Mona began, imagining the updated avatar of the beloved character. “I think she’ll be the new version of Devil Wears Prada. It’ll be something like that, you know, where I am the mentor and I have a new Jessie to train under me. I see it that way because obviously I can’t give myself another makeover.”
Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin aired on Sony TV from 1 September 2003 to 4 May 2006. The series served as an Indian adaptation of the popular Colombian show Yo Soy Betty, la Fea. Inspired heavily by Yo Soy Betty, la Fea, the story revolves around Jasmeet “Jassi” Walia (Mona Singh), a plain but sharp and sincere young woman from a middle-class Mumbai family. She shoulders financial responsibilities at home and is constantly uplifted by her supportive father, her grandmother Bebe, and her loyal friend Nandu (Gaurav Gera). Despite her intelligence, Jassi often faces rejection because of her appearance.
Her life changes when she lands her dream job at Gulmohur, a renowned fashion house. As the secretary to Armaan Suri (Apurva Agnihotri), Jassi struggles initially but soon becomes an essential part of the company. Quietly and deeply, she begins to fall for Armaan, though she keeps her feelings hidden.
As Jassi grows professionally, she encounters resistance and sabotage from those threatened by her rise, most notably Armaan’s domineering girlfriend, Mallika (Rakshanda Khan). When circumstances spiral out of control, Jassi is forced to disappear. Businessman Purab Mehra (Samir Soni) rescues her and helps orchestrate her transformation into the glamorous Jessica Bedi, enabling her to conceal her identity and seek justice for the wrongs done to her family.
Meanwhile, Armaan, devastated by Jassi’s disappearance, unexpectedly finds himself drawn to Jessica, unaware she is Jassi in disguise. The story culminates with Jassi revealing the truth, reuniting with Armaan, and the two ultimately taking charge of Gulmohur together.
