In the collective memory of millions, Kunal Nayyar is Raj Koothrappali, the lovable, astrophysicist with a penchant for romantic comedies and a long-standing struggle with selective mutism. But as he logs onto our Zoom call from his home in Los Angeles, the man staring back is a far cry from the sitcom caricature. He is thoughtful, deeply grounded and clearly operating in a new chapter of his life that is less about “Bazingas” and more about building a lasting legacy.
We are meeting to discuss his latest pivot: technology. Specifically, IQ121, a digital ecosystem designed to solve a problem Kunal knows all too well as a global citizen.
“It really started with the basic frustration of trying to manage a family across different continents,” Kunal
explains. Living a life split between the frantic energy of Los Angeles, the storied streets of London and his roots in New Delhi, he realised that keeping track of his parents’ essentials was becoming a digital nightmare. “Every time I had to book a flight for my parents coming from India, I’d be asking them to WhatsApp me photos of their passports for the hundredth time. My mom would text me in a panic because she couldn’t find her flight details. It was stressful and I realised it’s a universal problem for families staying apart.”
The Digital Vault: IQ121
Launched in June 2025, IQ121: Legacy Planner is Kunal’s answer to that chaos. It’s a secure, London-based digital vault for sensitive documents including wills, passwords, insurance cards and even cherished photos. But for Kunal, the “why” behind the app became tragically clear during the devastating fires in Southern California.
“I had friends in the Pacific Palisades who had fireproof safes,” he recalls quietly. “They lost everything. The safes simply weren’t enough against that kind of heat. It’s a wake-up call that physical copies aren’t the ultimate safety net. You need both. IQ121 isn’t just about ‘data’; it’s about making sure that if something happens to you, your family isn’t left scrambling for a password or a deed.”
‘Roll Call Is About Staying Connected And Safe’
While the Legacy Planner is a premium service, its sister app, Roll Call, is entirely free. It functions as a one-tap daily check-in that notifies loved ones you are okay. If a user misses two consecutive check-ins, an emergency alert is triggered. Kunal insisted on keeping this tool entirely free, describing it less like a product and more like a necessary safety net for a world currently on edge. “Roll Call is my gift to the world,” Kunal says.
During the conversation, Nayyar also addressed the current climate around immigration in the United States. Without delving into politics, the actor, who has lived across India, the UK and the US, shared that in the face of rising anti-immigrant sentiment, kindness is the need of the hour.
“My only message is to lead with kindness and spread love,” he asserts. “Roll Call is a small way to ensure that, amidst the chaos, we at least know our people are safe.”
About The Big Bang Theory Reunion
It is impossible to speak with Kunal without touching on the phenomenon that defined a decade of television. The Big Bang Theory turned him into an overnight sensation, but for him, the “overnight” part lasted 12 years.
“We weren’t just coworkers; we were a family,” he says, reflecting on the bond with his cast mates like Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Jim Parsons. “Think about it, we spent twelve years together. We missed weddings for the show, we mourned deaths together, we celebrated birthdays on that set. By the time we shot the finale, we were so raw with emotion because we realised we were losing our daily rhythm with the people who knew us best.”
With fans continuing to hope for a reunion, Nayyar addressed the possibility with cautious realism. “I don’t see a reunion happening anytime soon,” he admits. “It’s only been six or seven years since we wrapped. I think the show needs more time to live in the hearts of the fans, before we even think about stepping back onto that set. Not yet. We still have some time.”
