Goa might be famous for its water sports but it recently became the site of a nightmare when a parasailing cable snapped mid-air, sending a helpless tourist plummeting into the Arabian Sea. While a swift rescue by boat crew averted a tragedy, the viral footage of the falling canopy has reignited a fierce national debate: Is adventure tourism in India a thrill, or a death sentence?
The Goa Police have launched an investigation into the operator’s equipment standards, but for many, this “near-miss” is simply the latest chapter in a grim catalog of negligence.
While the Baga incident ended with a rescue, the history of adventure sports in India over the last year suggests that luck is running thin. The industry has been plagued by equipment failure
and inadequate training, leading to a string of tragedies across the country’s most popular tourist hubs. A 27-year-old woman from Pune and her 26-year-old instructor were killed in Goa last year when their paraglider crashed into a ravine after taking off from the Keri Plateau.
In October last year, a 26-year-old trainee narrowly escaped death after losing control during a paragliding session and falling into the freezing waters of Tehri Lake. Similarly, in July last year, a 25-year-old tourist from Ahmedabad lost his life in Indrunag when a glider failed to lift during take-off, crashing into the rugged terrain.
Despite these recurring “accidents,” critics argue that the “chalta hai” (it’s okay) attitude continues to dominate the sector. The viral video has triggered a wave of outrage on X (formerly Twitter), with users calling for everything from total bans to 100% equipment audits. “How many ‘near-misses’ do we need before adventure sports are strictly regulated? We need 100% equipment audits now! #SafeTourism #GoaNews,” wrote one user.
Another user commented: “Thrill in this country can be costly. Most operators really don’t care and are only interested in how many people they can get. Absolute lack of safety and rules.” Some users called out the callous behaviour of operators in Goa specifically: “These guys in Goa don’t care about safety… All they care about is making money. There are no safety standards at all and we trust these operators with our lives.”

But most users asked for strict repercussions for these operators. “Unfortunately even if some incident occurs still nothing happens and things continue the way they are. We need consequences.”
