According to one story, St. Valentine refused to convert to paganism and was executed by Emperor Claudius II in 270 AD. Before his execution, he healed his jailer’s daughter.
According to legend, he eventually fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and, on the day of his execution, sent her a letter addressed “from your Valentine.” Another prevalent belief is that St. Valentine was executed because he secretly performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden from marrying by Claudius II’s edict.
Over time, the occasion developed from a religious observance to a celebration of romantic love, and by the 18th century, exchanging handwritten love letters had become widespread.
