Two bogies of the Delhi-bound Sikkim Mahananda Express derailed at Bihar’s Ara Junction in the early hours of Sunday, partially impacting rail traffic, officials said. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, which occurred at around 4 am.
According to news agency PTI, the derailment took place shortly after the train had started from Ara Junction.
East Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra said the train was moving at a low speed when the incident occurred.

“The incident
occurred early in the morning when the train had just started from Ara Junction. Owing to the train’s low speed and our failsafe system, no fatalities or injuries were reported,” Chandra said.
IANS quoted Ara Station Manager NK Rai as saying that the incident occurred at Dana station when the Mahananda Express moved towards the Sasaram line.
Rai said he immediately arranged a reserved vehicle and left his home for the spot.
On reaching the location, he found that two wagons had derailed, with two wheels of each wagon coming off the track.
The incident affected rail traffic partially, though the downline was not impacted, according to the East Central Railway CPRO.
A preliminary investigation suggested that the derailment occurred after the train driver allegedly overshot a red signal, Chandra said.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the derailment occurred due to the driver’s fault, who overshot the red signal. However, a detailed inquiry will determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident,” the CPRO said, according to PTI.
The railway official stressed that the finding was preliminary and that a detailed inquiry would establish the exact circumstances leading to the derailment.
Despite the incident, the Sikkim Mahananda Express left Ara Junction at around 7.23 am, PTI reported, quoting Chandra.
