Mumbai, Sep 9 (PTI) The Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Pimpri-Chinchwad has slapped a fine of Rs 4,500 on the owner of a Toyota Fortuner for allegedly concealing the registration number plate using a device while driving on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The action was taken after a video of the vehicle with registration number MH14LN4888 on the expressway went viral on social media.
In the video, apparently shot from another car on the Pune-bound carriageway near Khalapur Toll Plaza, the SUV’s rear registration number plate is visible at first. Then suddenly its gets covered by a black film.
A senior official said that an RTO team tracked down the owner after watching the video. When questioned, the owner said he had got the device covering the number
plate with black film installed in Punjab to evade e-challans.
Action was taken against the vehicle under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and a total fine of Rs 4,500 was recovered from him. The RTO team also removed the device.
The Maharashtra government has installed AI-based automatic cameras for issuing e-challans on several stretches, including the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. PTI KK KRK
