The weekend box office race is beginning to take shape, and not every new release is seeing the kind of jump exhibitors hope for after opening day. While audiences had high expectations from one of Bollywood’s biggest comedy collaborations, the latest numbers suggest a slower-than-expected start.
David Dhawan’s latest directorial venture, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, has completed two days in theatres. However, the romantic comedy has shown little movement at the box office despite the advantage of a Saturday.
According to trade website Sacnilk, the film earned ₹7.25 crore on its second day. This comes after an opening-day collection of ₹7.50 crore, indicating that the film remained largely
flat on Saturday instead of registering significant growth.
With these figures, the movie’s India net collection stands at ₹14.75 crore, while its India gross collection has reached ₹16.38 crore.
The film’s performance comes amid stiff competition from other releases currently playing in cinemas. Ram Charan’s sports drama *Peddi* continues to attract audiences and reportedly earned more than ₹2 crore from its Hindi shows on Saturday alone. Hollywood thriller *Obsession* is also holding its ground and crossed ₹4.71 crore on Saturday.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai marks David Dhawan’s final film as a director and brings together a cast led by Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. The comedy revolves around Jass, played by Varun Dhawan, whose marriage to Bani (Mrunal Thakur) falls apart after she decides to seek a divorce, claiming she cannot match his sexual appetite. Jass, who is desperate to become a father, later moves on with Preet, played by Pooja Hegde. Things spiral into complete chaos when both women become pregnant and he finds himself at the centre of an increasingly complicated situation.
The film has also remained in the news for reasons beyond its box office performance. Ahead of its theatrical release, Puja Entertainment approached the Bombay High Court with a ₹400 crore lawsuit against Tips Industries Limited, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar S Taurani and filmmaker David Dhawan.
According to the production house, songs from Vashu Bhagnani’s 1999 hit Biwi No. 1 were used in the film without proper rights. Two songs from the earlier film reportedly feature in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.
Puja Entertainment has argued that the title itself is linked to the song Ishq Sona Hai and has sought not only the removal of the songs from the film and promotional material but also a change in the film’s title. The company has further sought an additional ₹100 crore in damages if its demands are not met.
Meanwhile, all eyes are now on the film’s Sunday performance, which could determine whether it manages to build momentum or continues its modest run at the box office.
