Indian benchmark equity indices opened higher on Tuesday, tracking positive global cues and buying interest in auto and FMCG stocks. At around 9:33 am IST, the BSE Sensex was up 184.11 points, or 0.24%, at 76,662.78, while the Nifty 50 gained 56.30 points, or 0.24%, to 23,922.05.
The Sensex traded between an intraday high of 76,713.86 and a low of 76,538.37 after opening at 76,545.21. On the NSE, the Nifty touched a high of 23,937 during early trade.
Among the top gainers on the Sensex were Eternal, which surged 2.51%, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (up 2.05%), Titan (1.80%), Hindustan Unilever (1.68%), UltraTech Cement (0.90%) and Adani Ports (0.82%). IT heavyweights Infosys and TCS also traded in the green, while Reliance Industries, Axis Bank
and HDFC Bank posted modest gains.
On the losing side, Bajaj Finserv was the biggest laggard, falling 2%, followed by Tech Mahindra (-1.05%), Larsen & Toubro (-0.58%), ICICI Bank (-0.45%), NTPC (-0.45%) and HCL Technologies (-0.26%).
Broader markets also traded with a positive bias. The Nifty Midcap Select advanced 0.56%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.50%, indicating continued buying in the broader market.
Sectorally, Nifty Media emerged as the top performer, rising 2.93%, followed by Nifty FMCG (1.28%), Nifty Auto (0.81%) and Nifty Realty (0.77%). However, Nifty Metal declined 0.72%, making it the worst-performing sector in early trade. Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Financial Services 25/50 also traded marginally lower.
