What happens when you leave behind the so-called ‘dream life abroad’ to return to India? While many may not find it a good idea, for one Reddit user, it has turned out to be nothing short of life-changing. After spending four years abroad, two in Texas and two across Amsterdam, Paris, and Munich, they moved back to a tier-3 South Indian town while working remotely on a good salary.

They have now reflected on her experience in a post titled, “A year ago, I moved back to India, and I can confidently say it has been the best decision of my life,” on Reddit and it has the Internet’s attention.

Life Without Racism One of the biggest reliefs for the Redditor was the freedom

from racial hints. While they clarified they never faced direct racism, subtle biases abroad left a lasting impression on him. They wrote, “I feel genuinely good knowing my kids will go to school where no one will call them ‘Jeets,’ ‘brown curry,’ ‘poop blocker,’ or whatever the latest insult might be. That peace of mind is priceless. I have never faced direct racism in any country. But subtle racism in the US. Like waiters hesitating to attend us. Not using ‘please’ When others are interacting with us etc.”

Healthcare And Finances
Another game-changer for them was healthcare access. Mentioning that there is zero wait time for medical appointments in India, they noted, “In India, you can get a same-day appointment with a brain surgeon or super-speciality doctor, and it’s surprisingly affordable,” he wrote, pointing to their uncle’s free liver transplant at Vellamal hospital as an example.

Even financially, the return proved to be much more beneficial. With smart commercial property investments, they earn Rs 1 lakh monthly while keeping living expenses below Rs 20,000. Add to that the comfort of household help, including a cook and others.

Emotional reasons also have a major role to play as they went on, “What if I only get to see my mom 10–15 more times in my life? That hit hard. Now, I see her every day, and that kind of comfort is irreplaceable.”

Strong Schooling And Work-Life Balance
The Redditor also praised India’s education system, highlighting that kids here re sharper than their general US counterparts. Interestingly, they also challenged the stereotype that people in India overwork. According to them, Indians enjoy a balanced schedule, as they put it, “There’s a misconception that people in India work too much. I work a maximum of 5 hours a day. 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening to align with the US team. The rest of my time is spent working on my farm near the villa. It’s a peaceful life.”

The Cons: Transport And Corruption
Of course, not everything is good here. They admitted to three major drawbacks, including cleanliness, public transport and corruption. Despite the lack of corruption and the existence of corruption, they stressed that these drawbacks have little impact on their daily life.
