The Delhi Gymkhana Club is under mounting scrutiny after documents accessed by CNN-News18 revealed that the elite institution owes nearly Rs 47.58 crore in unpaid ground rent to the Land and Development Office (L&DO).
The dues figure prominently in the Centre’s ongoing action against the club, which has been ordered to vacate its 27.3-acre premises in Lutyens’ Delhi by June 5.
Centre Warns Of Re-Entry Proceedings Over Non-Payment
It is learnt that the L&DO issued three letters to the club authorities over a span of nine months, directing them to clear the outstanding amount of Rs 47,58,91,317.
In one of the notices, the office warned that “failure to comply with these directions and remit the outstanding amount of Rs 47,58,91317 crore within the stipulated
7-day period will constrain this office to initiate re-entry proceedings for the premises, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the lease deed.”
MCA Inspection Cites Financial, Administrative Irregularities
The rent dispute comes amid wider allegations of financial misconduct and administrative irregularities flagged by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) during its 2022 inspection of the club. Government records reportedly mention alleged corruption involving nearly Rs 50 crore in public deposits, illegal appointments, refusal to comply with NCLT and NCLAT orders, and complaints filed by members and staff against certain directors.
The Centre has justified the eviction order by citing national security and defence infrastructure requirements, noting the strategic location of the club near key government and defence establishments.
The controversy has also been intensified by allegations from former board member and whistleblower, Niji Sapra, who claimed she faced suspension and eventual loss of membership after raising concerns about alleged MCA guideline violations and financial irregularities within the club.
The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the matter on Tuesday after club members sought urgent relief against the eviction notice issued by the Centre.
