Even after a clean chit, actor Rhea Chakraborty insists she was never responsible for Sushant Singh Rajput’s death — and her family still bears the emotional scars. The actress recently opened up at an NDTV event about the life-altering ordeal of the 2020 Sushant Singh Rajput death case. For Rhea, the months following Sushant’s death were filled with public scrutiny, jail time and personal grief, leaving her perspective on life — and her family — forever changed.
“People said he did not go because of you. I always knew I hadn’t done anything. But even when the clean chit came, I couldn’t feel happy. I was only happy for my parents and their reputation. But, we were no longer the same carefree family, it can’t come back. That moment altered all
of us completely, for our entire life,” she said.
Rhea spoke candidly about her 28 days in jail, describing how it changed her outlook. “You realise everything – what you had, when you were thinking there was nothing. Because, vahan toh kuch bhi nahi milta hai. You can’t take your parents for granted as they keep asking you if you’ve had food. There’s no one to take care of you in jail. But, I missed my family the most.”
She also reflected on how prison life forced her to re-evaluate relationships and values. “You become a different person after going to jail. You stop thinking what people think about you because that will surely cause depression. You start valuing food a lot. Ghar ka dal chawal bhi pizza se kam feel nahi hota hai. You also realise that you only have 3-4 friends in the world, rest everyone else is not your friend.”
Even amid hardship, she sought to spread small moments of joy. “People asked me to dance for them. I did naagin dance on the day of my bail. I thought that we never know when I’ll meet them next and if I can give them a moment of happiness, then why not? Most of those women are innocent and hopeless in such under-trial prisons.”
In June 2020, actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence, sparking a high-profile investigation that drew national attention. Initially treated as an accidental death, the case quickly attracted intense media scrutiny and public debate. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later took over the probe to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death. After months of investigation, the CBI concluded that there was no evidence implicating Rhea Chakraborty or others close to him in his death, giving her a clean chit and closing the chapter on allegations against her.
