‘Next Round Of India-US Trade Talks Tomorrow,’ Says US Envoy Sergio Gor

The next round of talks on trade between India and the United States will take place tomorrow, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said. The discussions come amid tensions after the US imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods. Gor also indicated that President Donald Trump may visit India soon.

After assuming charge as US Ambassador to India on Monday, Sergio Gor said both sides remain engaged in trade talks, with the next call scheduled tomorrow. He noted that while finalising a deal is challenging, the two countries remain determined and will continue cooperation across security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education and health.

Speaking on the India-US trade negotiations, Gor said, “Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next

call on trade will occur tomorrow. India is the world’s largest nation. So it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there and while trade is very important for our relationship, we will continue to work closely together on other very important areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health…”

The US Ambassador’s remarks have come at a sensitive moment for India-US trade ties, with negotiations yet to reach a breakthrough. His statement follows comments by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who said the proposed trade deal has not taken shape because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not personally speak to US President Donald Trump.

Gor highlighted the strategic importance of the India-US partnership. His comments have renewed attention on the stalled trade discussions between the two countries.

Recently, US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer visited New Delhi with his team to review the negotiations. The latest two-day round of talks concluded on December 11, 2025. Indian industry bodies and exporters are closely monitoring developments, as high import duties continue to affect shipments to the US. While exporters are exploring alternative markets, the US remains crucial, accounting for around 18 per cent of India’s total exports.

Under the proposed agreement, the US has sought duty concessions on farm products such as almonds, corn and apples, along with industrial goods. India has opposed concessions in agriculture and dairy, citing the need to protect farmers and MSMEs.

In February 2025, leaders of both nations asked officials to finalise the deal, aiming to conclude the first tranche by fall 2025. The goal is to raise bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. The US was India’s largest trading partner in 2024–25, with trade worth $131.84 billion.
